There comes a time when courage to stand out in the crowd has everything to do with caring for others. Author Melissa Miller has certainly shown her caring for the next generation with the content of her debut novel, Trinity's Hope.

Rather than disappearing into a sea of virtually identical works, Ms. Miller's spot-on story can be described in a word--memorable. The story of the Carondolette's is touching, insightful and engaging. Their value system is the foundation that they stand upon in a time where doing `your thang' has become society's mantra.

Beyond choices to be made within a budding relationship, the story invites the reader into a world where consequences of choice is weighed not only for self, but for others. It also opens eyes to how to love (family and others) with vulnerability and without compromise.

Although most will recommend this as a teen read, Trinity's Hope is a valuable read for all ages.

Be Careful What You See and Say!

Snitch by Booker T. Mattison sheds light on the harsh realities of life.

It is the story of Andre Bolden, a young man whose life is turned upside down by errors in judgment and the price that the code of the streets says he must pay.

In his quest to regain control of his life Andre will be pulled in many directions. His chosen avenues to travel for answers, some may consider extreme. To Andre they become the tools that will help unearth deeply buried emotions. Unbeknownst to him his chosen path is also leading him toward discovering purpose.

Author Mattison goes beyond the expected story to shed light on issues of suicide, mental health, the offshoots of family dysfunction and religion. To be honest an interview with Booker Mattison is more like a quiet conversation with a friend. His humility and passion for his work is beyond inspiring. Most important, a conversation with Booker Mattison is an opportunity to share a bit of this stimulating writer with you. Please enjoy.

LUBF: How did Snitch come about?

BTM: "My first thoughts for a second book did not sit well with my agent. What is now Snitch was a part of another work that came to the forefront."

LUBF: The code of the street in terms of snitching is a timeless one. My question becomes, why this story and why now?

BTM: "We’re facing a silent crisis that’s not getting enough attention. Other countries are prime examples of what lawlessness left to run amuck – what it does to lives. Add to that the blue wall of silence has entrenched the same code as that of the streets yet they expect citizens to do what they won’t."

LUBF: Do you feel that the scenarios inside of Snitch can be equated with the growing by bullying issue?

BTM: "Totally different issues, but in practice we know that snitching involves intimidation, therefore, to a degree they can be linked, but not convinced that these two issues are related."

LUBF: Andre, like many is a man of above average intellect, why is he settling for less in life?

BTM: "He has come to identify himself intrinsically with his failings. He believes himself to be unlovable. Because he does he takes responsibility for the things he wasn’t responsible for."

LUBF: On the other side of this literary coin we have Sandra who seems to have it all. What do you feel allowed her to get off track and join the ranks of the struggling?

BTM: "Sandra reminds me of young women raised in strong families, they are covered and protected, but in a sense it makes them more vulnerable to men like Andre.

LUBF: So do you believe that in giving her so much o one thing, her parents may have unintentionally set her up for failure:

BTM: "Sandra's parents giving what they did cannot be used as a reason for her inability to make sound decisions. What has become common in Western culture is childen going out to discover the world--it leaves them open to whatever. Statistics show that 98% of people who marry are not virgins; this includes those in the church."

LUBF: It is said that a writer can reveal the nature of the protagonist through supporting characters. Was the entire supporting cast pre-planned or did some just fall into place?

BTM: "In my works I want to show what is in my background, strong AA males.

LUBF: What do you want people to take away from Snitch –

BTM: When on tour with Unsigned Hype I visited many schools and libraries. When I asked attendees what they thought about snitches & snitching – the universal thought was that it’s a bad thing. I then asked if they would tell if the crime was committed against them or they family. The moment they personalized it, things changed.

LUBF: In terms of your writing, what is it to you?
BTM: "I consier my writing my daily bread. I write as the Lord gives."

Booker makes it very clear that he didn’t write Snitch to force others into telling. It was written in order to:

Fairly present both sides of the issue
To allow reader to personalize it in order to make decisions
For communities to come together for discussion
Hopefully open dialogue across the nation.

CHARACTER IS EVERYTHING

Readers need a reason to invest in your story. That investment usually comes in the form of a connection to one or more of your characters. It’s the author’s job to create and maintain the personality of their characters. If they start off crazy, unless the goal is for them to remain in that state, crazy is how they should end up.

That is just one example of showing character trait. One opportunity that many overlook is character revelation via response to others. How does he/she act in response to abrasive comments, being the brunt of a joke or a random act of kindness?

Keep this in mind; your characters should be so well defined that your reader can identify them even if you remove their names from the passages.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Take the synopsis below and create Betty, her background and something in it that would justify her actions.

Synopsis: Betty’s strong outer shell, straight-no chaser dialogue has always been attributed to her military training. In an unexpected turn of events, it will be Betty, not her equally hardened co-harts, who goes beyond the call of duty to befriend one who is unmercifully bullied.

By the time you finish you should be able to answer the following questions:

*What is it about Betty that will endear and/or give readers a mixed reaction to who she is?
*How did I grow her while building intrigue and guarding her secret?
*What situations set her off?
*How do her obvious traits make you believe you know what she’ll do next?
*How do her friends support or hamper her goals?

What do you get when you combine a born-again Christian, a handsome widow and his adorable daughter? A match made in heaven? Maybe—maybe not.

The relationship between Karyn Wallace and Levi Tolliver seems to be headed in the right direction; that is until he reveals his true thoughts—he believes that anyone on the wrong side of the law deserves whatever punishment they get. In this new order of things within the literary industry, there have been an increasing number of writing conferences/workshops offered around the country and at sea.

Today's post is to bring attention to the fact that the increase in numbers and locale does not always equate to the right fit for your needs. For those who are new to writing, it must be understood that not every conference/workshop is appropriate for your needs.

Most importantly, as a literary professional it will be to your advantage to face the fact that writing is a business with offerings that may or may not help to further your goals.

Writing is also a business where the bottom line matters. It definitely matters when considering how much and where to invest your business dollars; this includes the consideration of which conferences/workshops will help to develop your skills.

Below are a few tips to consider when assessing the conference/workshop you might attend:

*Write a statement of your NEEDS rather than your WANTS

*Compile a list that HONESTLY presents your STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES

*Make a list of conference/workshops of interest to you

*List their offerings

*Compare those offerings to your NEEDS and WANTS

This list of comparisons combined with your financial budget will paint a realistic picture.

Now that you see the whole picture, the option that you feel most beneficial to you might be beyond your current financial means. Do not despair. Consider how you can realistically afford the investment via short/long term planning without placing yourself in financial jeopardy. Contemplate the following:

*Revisit the conference page to see if they have a payment option that fits your budget

*Contact the conference coordinator to see if there in an attendee in need of a roommate

*Bring a friend who might be interested in attending or visiting the host town and willing to share a room
*If possible, become a conference volunteer.
NOTE: Before you do, make sure that you will have adequate time to attend the classes you prefer when not on duty.

Keep in mind that whether your conference/workshop attendance is for the purpose of continuing education, expanding your speaking platform or networking with fans and peers, there is something out there that is the right fit for you. Now that you know this, go ahead and do your homework and then wisely invest in yourself.

To Be or Not To Be

Reality: “But when you have seen vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim; when you have seen hate filled policemen curse, kick, brutalize and even kill your black brothers and sisters with impunity; when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see the depressing clouds of inferiority begin to form in her little mental sky, and see her begin to distort her little personality by unconsciously developing a bitterness toward white people; when you have to concoct an answer for a five-year-old son asking in agonizing pathos: "Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?"; when you take a cross-country drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading "white" and "colored"; when your first name becomes "nigger," your middle name becomes "boy" (however old you are) and your last name becomes "John," and your wife and mother are never given the respected title "Mrs."; when you are harried by day and haunted by night by the fact that you are a Negro, living constantly at tip-toe stance never quite knowing what to expect next, and plagued with inner fears and outer resentments; when you are forever fighting a degenerating sense of "nobodiness"; then you will understand why we find it difficult to wait.”

Dr. King not only led a nation, he perfectly wrote the longest sentence (316 words). This excerpt is from Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.

Can We Follow Your Lead?

How often have you heard an author say, “My inspiration comes from God, I write out of passion, writing is my purpose.”

Those words are quite inspiring and hold much weight in terms of impressing your audience and perspective readers. They do because what we say and what we write has the ability to plant seeds and sway long-standing ideas to the opposite side of the street.

As Christian/Inspirational authors our primary goal should be to write stories that edify Christ. Beyond that, whether the work be simplistic or deep, it will entertain, provoke thought and plant seeds of encouragement.

Beyond the preparation and presentation of the final project, there is something important that we must acknowledge and accept—the invisible mantle of leadership. In spite what we think or have been led to believe, our works are leading someone, somewhere.

Leading?

Yes Leading. Our words are the extension of the leadership abilities vested in us through the gift of the written word. Regardless of what we set out to do, whatever we set to print will teach someone, lead someone, to certain conclusions.

As we enter into this new year and new season of writing I encourage each of us to look deep inside and then ask important questions. Ask yourself—is writing my true purpose? Is writing my passion? If the answers to both questions are yes, then ask—where am I leading my readers with my content? What passions am I stirring and are they constructive or destructive? Most important of all ask yourself—do I write out of conviction to extend the boundaries of the Kingdom, or do I write in order to climb to the top of a bestsellers list in order to gain and maintain national recognition of my name?

Striving to be a bestseller and to have our work acclaimed through literary awards, in and of itself is a noble aspiration. As noble as it is I would be remiss if I did not revisit the central theme of this post—leadership. For those of us who have picked up a pen and proclaimed ourselves to be scribes of the Kingdom, I pray for you. I pray that your goal is to lead through the inspiration of the One who has blessed and trusted you with the gift of writing; rather than the one who will pay you to pervert the gift under the guise of keeping it real.

Leadership, whether sought or unintentionally assumed is a huge responsibility that is so eloquently defined in the words of Dr. Myles Munroe, "Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose."

What lurks in the hearts of men is a question often asked. A portion of that answer can be found in the pages of The Retreat, the sophomore offering from Dijorn Moss.

This story focuses on three men setting out to attend the annual Men’s Retreat. Each is attending for their own reason. Chauncey is a bona fide Bible thumping, scripture quoting, self-righteous, religious nut, without a clue, who would rather go blind than miss this event. Quincy seeks to confront the one he believes has caused the demise of his marriage. Jamal has been offered the job of a lifetime, but it may alter life as he knows it. And then there’s Will.

Through these pages the author has skillfully entwined the lives of these men. Their points of view vary, but their choice to be vulnerable will bring them more than either expected from attending The Retreat.

Here is my question of the day – what does the word Home mean to you?

Is it the place where you grew up? Could it be that place in your mind that you retreat to in order to escape the pressures of this world?

As we enter this holiday season many are making preparations to journey home; some with a joyful heart, others out of a sense of duty. Many more refuse or avoid the opportunity to sit at the table with loved ones and others for a variety of reasons.

Unfortunately a majority of those reasons are rooted in misunderstandings, hurt feelings or just plain selfishness. If you find this to be your current circumstance I would like you to do something—go deep inside yourself and examine what may have brought you to this place. Now, consider what you may be missing out on due to those circumstances then ask yourself – has it been worth the loss?

Time is precious and something that cannot be redeemed—so why waste another moment? Go home. Home can be more than that walled structure most relate to. It can be that place where relationships moved from the realm of comfort and security to that of strained or broken. In your mind all seems hopeless due to the time that has passed and the potency of the pain we may have endured or inflicted upon another. Regardless of what it might be, know that you can go HOME AGAIN; you can because extending or accepting forgiveness is a matter of choice.

The words to this song (highlighted below) are so profound. Allow them to speak to your heart and if you are in need, make the decision to return Home.

“God is in the business of redeeming and restoring. No matter how low you feel you are in your life, God can pull you out. The Mercer family is an example that God can deliver you from any situation or circumstance and that God can restore a once broken relationship.”

This anthology is about restoration. Restoration is defined as: an act of restoring or the condition of being restored: as a: a bringing back to a former position or condition. Tell us what you require in a relationship and what would cause you to step away from it.

“I require honesty above all. What can cause me to walk away from a relationship is an act of betrayal that is so severe that I questioned everything about the relationship.”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“Prayer and I go on Youtube and listen to a lot of sermons that deal with restoration.”

On the personal side, I'm a pretty laid-back, quiet person always on the move. LOL! I have a motto about never wanting to be bored and I stick pretty closely to that motto by staying super busy. My busyness comes from the professional side of being a graphic designer and online book promoter. I have been running my own business, Tywebbin.com, since 1999 and my niche over the years has been working with authors. I usually take off the holidays, so I'm really looking forward to winding down in a few weeks for the year. In 2006, I let a few folks, like family and friends know I was seriously writing. I currently have two manuscripts, one a romantic suspense and the other a cozy mystery. My short story, “Birthing Pains,” is my first official published work of fiction (Yeah!).”

“Coming out of a difficult relationship, communication and honesty are big factors. I think if you don't communicate clearly, you open the door for cracks to enter the relationships and those cracks turn into brokenness. That's an interesting question - because I have found myself in that place of asking that question as I know many do. I think where I would really step away is when I have done all that I can do and it's left up to the other person to make the move. If they don't, you have to - not to be cliché here - let it go and leave it to God.”

Birthing Pains presents a story that is becoming too common in America. How do you hope for this story to help others?

“Birthing Pain presents a story that isMeet a wife and mother, EUGEENA PATTERSON, who has always been the glue keeping her fragmented family together. When her troubled teenage daughter is rushed to the hospital, Eugeena is forced to acknowledge the animosity and resentment that has lived under the surface far too long. As I talked about in the previous question, I do hope this story opens up the lack of communication that happens in families. The disconnect between a husband and a wife, those dysfunctions travel down to affect the children. Thinking of how I grew up with my family talking around the dinner table, those moments really stick with me and I know they just don't happen anymore. Married couples owe it to each other to take the time for each other and also to be active participants in their children's lives together as a unit.”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“I believe readers will find a connection to many if not all of the stories which makes this a powerful collection. I wrote my story during a time of being broken down myself and watching family dynamics also break down. What I hope is with any situation God has allowed me to go through, to minister with transparency and wisdom.”

“My name is Trinea Moss and I grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California. I am new to the writing industry, but find myself intrigue with the various types of writing genres that our out there. I have written many short stories before, but only let a handful of people read some of my work. Throughout the years I have books full of poems stored away and drawing books as well. I guess one can say I have a love for the arts.”

“I require honesty, fairness (equals), laughter and faithfulness in a relationship. For me, what it takes to step of away from a relationship, I really can't say. I believe it would have to be some form of abuse that would cause me to walk away because no one should take out any form of abuse in any relationship.”

Couple on Trial presents a story that is not often comfortable to talk about, let alone deal with without vulnerability. How do hope for this story to help others?

“I know what its like not to want to put your personal business out there and have everyone in it. However, this story is meant for couples to take a look a their relationship and spark communication. How can you fix or examine a relationship that you want to keep, without communicating? It just won’t work. Therefore, I hope couples will take a deeper look and really talk to each, not at each other about how they fell about their relationship. “

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“I speak from my research, experiences and just plain old common sense. I don't have all the answers, but I have picked up some wisdom along the way. Throughout the years at different points and times I have researched various types of relationships. I come from the standpoint of just simply keeping it real and keeping God in each relationship you have. Many times people know what needs to be done to repair their relationships, but something holds them back. For some it’s pride, validation or just plain old stubbornness. Sometimes, they just need someone to listen, pray or just provide a different point of view and that is something I can do.”

Maurice Gray

“I wear many hats: author, editor, HIV Prevention Counselor, Toastmaster and sometimes comedian. My day job is with a non-profit organization, Beautiful Gate Outreach Center (www.bgate.org). I’ve been a published author for over ten years, and I’ve edited/proofread manuscripts for nine. Comedy is a hobby that I get to indulge only rarely, but I’ve been blessed to work with such great talents as Pat G’orge-Walker and James “The Storyteller” Ford. My church home is Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE. Aside from membership in Toastmasters International (Greater Newark Area Toastmasters club), I’m also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.”

“In any relationship, there must be love, trust and mutual respect. If any of those factors are missing or sorely lacking, I'd have to step away. It's tougher to do that with family members, but if there is a toxic relationship with a family member and God leads me to step away from that person, I'd have to do it. In a romantic relationship, I definitely need the same level of love, trust and respect that I give or I can't stay in it. Both of us being saved is a given.”

Family Matters tells the story of a young man who feels he’s on the fringe of his mother’s love. Tell us why? How do you hope for this story to help others?

“Erik is the only child of two loving parents, but for the past several years, he has felt neglected. His parents (his mother in particular) mentored several young people over the years who needed positive adult influences in their lives. As a result, Erik (now nearing 30) has over a dozen "play siblings" close to his own age with whom to share his parents. He feels that his mother invests all of her energy in her "crew" and he gets what's left over. As this story begins, Erik and his mother have barely spoken in almost a year. Neither is sure how to mend the rift until a horrible accident makes them both painfully aware of how unimportant their differences are. I want my readers to see that life is short and that we shouldn't take our loved ones for granted. Whether we like it or not, they won't always be with us and we can't let disagreements (real or imagined) separate us from those we love the most.”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“The same skills I use in HIV counseling are useful in guiding those who may have broken relationships. Part of the process of preparing someone for testing involves discussion of risk factors for HIV, which often involve (directly or indirectly) that person's relationships. I listen to what that person has to say and then draw on every bit of knowledge God has given me to try and help that person end their risk factors. If I were to counsel a reader who is estranged from a friend or loved one, I'd do the exact same thing: pray, listen and share.”

“My name is Shenette Jones, and I wear many hats! I’m a Fitness training specialist by profession. I’m a dance instructor, a professional vocalist and assistant to my husband in Jones Entertainment, our music performance business. I’m also a Community Chaplain and speaker. I’m excited to finally add published author to this list. Laying all hats aside, I thoroughly enjoy homeschooling my son and spending time with my family. I love being professional, but the truth is I find it rather tough at times. Everyone who knows me finds that I’m indeed a free spirited kid at heart for lack of better terms. Please give us a preview and tell us how you hope for this story to help others? “Uncovered is a story that follows the thought process of a wife straying from her faith. She’s incredibly desperate for things she lacks within her marriage, and shocks herself beyond disbelief when she realizes what she, a woman of faith, will do for fulfillment. I’m hoping this story will immediately cause the reader to look into their own thought process. As people, we have many flawed thoughts, and if we’d take time to deal with them instead of toss them aside, we’d probably find ourselves in fewer traps. I want women particularly to face the fact that no matter how holy we believe we are, a fall can often be a thought away. But the GOOD news is that restoration can also be a prayer away!”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“Steven, my husband and I have unfortunately gone through a trail of events that are similar to the story, uncovered. Since then, Marriage, healing in marriage, and how to enjoy marriage, has been one of our most in depth studies. Personal experience with a victorious outcome is my greatest tool, but the absolute best way for me to prepare is to know what God’s word tells me about restoration and to know without a shadow of doubt that his promise is true for everyone that crosses my path.”

“What I require in a relationship is LOVE, LOYALTY, GRACE, FORGIVENESS. The violation of any of these principles would make me consider leaving a relationship. For me, when it becomes impossible to live by either of these principle it's time to leave. Leaving a relationship should never be an emotional decision but one weighed in prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit.”

Jake and Eric speaks to an age old trial—sibling rivalry. Why did you decide to write this story? Please give us a preview and tell us how you hope for this story to help others?

“Jake and Eric was inspired by Jacob and Esau. Abraham's family is intriguing to me. They are a people called out for purpose but yet they have severe generational dysfunction. I hope that my story will portray the toxic effects of unforgiveness and betrayal. And will portray the joy of reconciliation.”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“One focus of my ministry has been the reconciliation and strengthening of families. I believe that the family is God's greatest instrument to effect and impact society and my prayer and purpose is to see families healed and whole, living for God.”

“I have but one requirement in a relationship – respect. Without respect I don’t feel that you can get to anything else. Lack of respect, once it has be brought up that I feel the lack, would cause me to reconsider the need to remain or stay.”

Flavorful opens the door for parents, teachers and guardians to examine how they nurture the children under their care. Why did you choose this storyline? how do you hope for this story to help others?

“Flavorful is my way of giving voice to those without one. That could be the child, parent, guardian or teacher. Although what happens to my character is extreme, it unfortunately is not an isolated one. Children are a gift and need guidance regarding their God-given gifts. On the other hand, if we have not been taught or do not understand our responsibilities to our children, how can we properly help them?”

How have you prepared to minister regarding the issue of broken relationships that this anthology features?

“As a youth minister, the opportunities have been ongoing. Beyond that, championing the cause for those in need is a part of who I am. The opportunity to contribute to this anthology, I believe will open the door to bring the message to a wider audience.”

Hello everybody. I know it’s been a minute since we’ve last chatted and I apologize for such a long absence. I believe you’ll forgive me once you hear the reason for my short hiatus. I’ve been working on several projects and I’m proud to announce the release of the first one—Home Again: Stories of Restored Relationships.

This anthology is one I’m proud to be a contributor to. More than that, I’m looking forward to seeing how God will work through the collective works of the authors.

So what is this anthology about? Glad you asked. The central theme is the restoration of relationships. Those relationships may fall within the realm of father/son, family indifference, husband/wife, or sibling rivalry. The examples presented are not unusual nor are they unsalvageable, with the help of God.

As an avid reader and literary professional, I must say that it is refreshing to come across an offering that is engaging, entertaining and provokes one to thought. It is especially invigorating as it pertains to Christian fiction literature.

Right Package, Wrong Baggage by Wanda B. Campbell is a work that is setting the bar for Christian fiction genre. Devoid of over-the-top conflict, baby mama drama and a majority of its pages dedicated to the sin nature of its characters, this book invites the reader into a relationship with goals. It also is a storyline with a process.

Within that process the ability to get to know the characters, their aspirations and fears are showcased. Within the realm of conflict, the absence of over-the-top drama is avoided. In its place is the presence of backtracking, i.e., the process of discovering what brought each to the point of insecurity. With skill, the author adds elements of intrigue to the story in order to keep the reader engaged and the story moving toward a feasible end.

If you are looking for a surface read, you will not find that within the pages of Right Package, Wrong Baggage. What you will find is a well-written book that brings light to a few subjects most are unwilling to speak about without prejudice or condemnation.

One of the most exciting things about reviewing books is the opportunity to converse with the author. Below is a bit of what author Maxine Billings would like to share with her readers. Enjoy!

LUBF - Please introduce us to your story.

MB - As most people probably know, IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH is my sequel to THE BREAKING POINT. In The Breaking Point, Darryl and Catina had met through their respective friends, Evan and Justine. In Sickness and In Health begins with the two couples celebrating Darryl and Catina’s one-year wedding anniversary. During the celebration, Darryl and Catina surprise their friends with the news that they are expecting their first child. As with most newlywed couples, they are in such a state of marital bliss that they feel nothing can ever separate them from one another’s love. But when Darryl loses both of his legs due to a car accident, their love is put to the test in ways they never imagined.

Darryl, feeling like less of the man he was before his terrible loss, can no longer give his wife the love she still desperately needs and craves. But Catina vows to stand by him even though he is no longer receptive to the love she obviously still has for him. However, just when he gains the courage to move on with their lives, she is confronted with another test of just how far she’s willing to go to keep her marriage together.

LUBF - What was the reason for writing this particular story?

MB - When I wrote The Breaking Point, I knew there would be a sequel. I also knew it would be Darryl and Catina’s story, but I had no idea what the conflict between them would be. Since my ideas come from real-life issues, the thought just popped in my head one day to let Darryl experience the personal tragedy of losing both of his legs. In this way, I could show how a health issue of that nature would affect his and Catina’s marriage—really put it to the test.

My reason for writing this particular story was to show just a few of the ways that I imagine a marriage in this situation might be tested. As I’ve already mentioned, usually when a couple is newly married, they feel that nothing can separate them from each other’s love. They say their vows, but in their minds, they’re not considering that anything will ever happen to cause their love for one another to cool off. But if something does happen, how might they respond?

LUBF - Darryl and Catina's best friends were truly a blessing. Do you feel that friendships today lack the fortitude to overcome what these couples endured?

MB - I do feel that some friendships are lacking in this area because everyone is going through something. Sometimes we can get so caught up in what we personally are going through that we don’t always have the strength or the patience to help someone else get through their troubles. But truly loving our family and friends and keeping in mind the Golden Rule will help us in our determination to always try to be there for them no matter what. It doesn’t mean we will always do or say the right things, but we try because our motives and intentions are good.

LUBF - You provided great information in terms of the needs for Darryl. Overall, what would you like your readers to take away from this book?

MB - It’s one thing to say you love someone. It’s a whole other thing to show you love someone. As the saying goes, action speaks louder than words. Sometimes we’re like children who just have to have that toy in the store. Mama or Daddy may tell us no, but we want it so bad that we keep pestering them until they finally get it for us. Well, what do we do when the newness wears off or something on it breaks? Do we throw it aside and ignore it? Is the love we had for it at first no more? Marriage can be like that toy. Do we treasure it as much as we did in the beginning? Even if something in it gets broken, do we cherish it enough to try to fix it?

LUBF - Your works tend to focus upon family issues. Is that the impetus that drives your muse?

MB - Yes, family/relationship issues definitely stimulate my muse and keep my writing juices flowing. Family relationships are especially important to me. All relationships present challenges, and I find it very interesting how people interact with one another in any relationship.

LUBF - Share with us your latest news.

MB - I have another short story that I’ve written. I’m considering publishing it as my next new release, and I’ve already started on its sequel. I’ve also started a sequel to my first published novel A MEASURE OF FAITH. In the works, too, is my first young adult novel. After the release of In Sickness and in Health this past April, I came up with the idea for another Breaking Point sequel. It will be titled FOR RICHER OR FOR POORER and will be Justin (Justine’s brother) and his wife Shayna’s story.

LUBF - Please share a little about yourself with us.

MB - I’ve been married for nearly twenty-nine years to a wonderful man and have two wonderful children. I have worked for the State of Georgia for over thirty years and am looking forward to retiring in the next four years. I enjoy cooking, gardening, dancing, and listening to jazz and R & B music.

LUBF: Introduce us to Brian Ganges – the man –the son of the Most High.

BG: I am a man on a mission from God. I’m real, relevant and I love ministering the Word of God in both the spoken and the written forms of communication. I am also a very balanced person. I don’t just read the Bible all day long, I also enjoy writing, spending time with my daughter, playing games on my Playstation, going to sporting events, and watching the Three Stooges.

LUBF: You are a contributor to The Soul of A Man Anthology. Tell us about your stories.

BG: I wrote two stories: “Manning Up with God,” which is my abridged autobiography. It deals with my divorce and some other challenges that I had. It is a candid piece that shows the struggle and the victory in overcoming my dilemma. The other story is “A Sense of Faith and Community,” which is a fictionalized account of some of the events of my life. It is written in and narrated from the perspective of my grandson. He gives a college speech about how I influenced his life by demonstrating to him the importance of giving back to your community and reaching out to people.

LUBF: As the author of Piecing the Puzzle Together, when did you see the fragmented pieces? What drove your need to help others pull their pieces together?

BG: I saw the fragmented pieces years ago, and still do today. Like many people, I was discouraged by much of what I was seeing and hearing in the church: controlling people, judgmental people, false doctrines, etc. and as a younger Christian I was looking for answers. This drove me to seek the answers to the questions that were in my heart, even though I might not have been able to articulate them exactly.

LUBF: Share your view of what a completed life puzzle looks like.

BG: A completed life is a balanced life. Our human lives consist of spirit, soul and body. Each of these three elements needs the proper amount of attention and nurturing in order to grow. So the completed life will give the proper amount of food, water, sunlight, exercise, etc. to each of these areas. Everyone is different, so some might need to give more attention in some areas than others, but the balance of these three will manifest a completed life puzzle.

LUBF: What thought would you like to leave with the readers of this interview?

BG: I want readers to know that their situation is not unique, and that there are many people (Christian or not) that feel alone, incomplete, lost, a failure, or as if they haven’t accomplished anything in this life. People just have to find the spiritual footing necessary to build a strong Christian life. Unfortunately, many people aren’t taught how to truly ground themselves in the truth. But with some study, a prayerful and open heart to the truth, God will reveal His Word to anyone that seeks Him; and He will manifest Himself in a way that each individual will understand it.

LUBF: What’s next for you in terms of your writing?

BG: I am currently working on my next book, which is a follow-up to “Piecing the Puzzle Together,” entitled “Lord, Deliver Me from Church Folks.” It is an expose' dealing with many of the misconceptions and things that are keeping many in the church bound by the traditions of men.

Do You Have Passion?

Well it’s been a while since I’ve popped in to share with you all.

The first thing I want to say is that it’s good to get away; opportunity to catch up with a few friends attending the Faith and Fiction Retreat was great. Over lunch we shared personal events of our lives. Sharing was wonderful, but I soon realized that the table topic would inevitably return to writing.

As I reflected upon what transpired the transparency of the moment revealed itself. Our common denominator was our writing passion. Passion is that thing that burns inside of you. You go to sleep and awaken thinking about the object of your desire. Rare is the time it is not on your mind. You knowingly and unknowingly eavesdrop on conversations and file certain dialogue in your mental rolodex for possible future use.

Passion in its appropriate context can be a beautiful thing, but don’t forget to take time out for your loved ones and other things that you love.

Speaking of things you love I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to Ms. Tia Ross and the fabulous staff who made the 2010 Black Writers and Reunion Conference an event to remember. For those who are SERIOUS about their writing, the BWRC is an educational experience where aspiring, novice and accomplished writers are well served. In other words -- when you leave the table, you are full.

I am full right now. I’m full with current projects to complete as well as with future possibilities and the anticipation of what this season will bring. I have been filled with the appetizers of inspiration follwed by healthy portions of information liberally garnished with words of encouragement.

As I leave for this moment I encourage you to venture out to expand the boundaries of your passion, whatever that might be. And as you do, remember to use your words to bear good fruit.

Research is the ingredient that helps to bring realism to the grand idea that is your novel, or in the words of Zora Neal Huston, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.”

Research not only brings realism to your story, it also stretches you and your reader. It will, only if the research is correct and relevant.

Relevant: having a bearing on or connection with the subject at issue.

So how do you begin? With a plan.

Think – What do you already know about the subject? Create mind map adding avenues of possibilities to explore. Engage those well-versed in the subject matter. Add to the mind map.

Consider – What is the conclusion you want your story to come to? What information on the mind map will get you there? Based on your goal, eliminate what is not relevant.

Research – Investigate your sources. Utilize living sources.

Notes – Keep good notes.

Evaluate – See what’s in your hand. Organize and trim the fat.

Have a Plan – How do you plan to use this information to the benefit of the story?

Seek Wise Counsel – Do not be afraid of constructive criticism. Fresh eyes help to build solid foundations.

As those fantastic ideas swimming inside your mind demand release, remember the necessity of research. Research is the necessary tool that will bring those ideas to life and to sustain them for years to come. It will not always be easy and will require patience and a critical eye. But know that it is worth the effort, for research has value beyond your literary need and possesses potential to take you places you did not intend to go and open doors of opportunity for one you may never encounter. Therefore, do not look upon the task as a chore to be done, but more as a level to ascend to. See research as an opportunity to expand your horizons.

I spent the first ten years of my life on a military base in Aberdeen, Maryland since my dad was in the Army. We moved to North East Maryland when I was about ten. I always remember the joy of opening a book, and reading mesmerizing stories that entertained me for hours! I went to the University of Maryland in College Park, earning my degree in Finance! My freshman English teacher claimed I was a great writer, and recommended that I change my major from Finance to English, but I didn’t heed his wise advice!

Instead of pursuing a literary career, I worked as an accountant for a travel agency for ten years. During that time, I traveled all over the world, including the following places: Germany, France, England, Tahiti, New Zealand, Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and Santo Domingo.

In 1994, I began writing for fun, and I kept doing it until I sold my first inspirational romance novel. Before I sold my novel, I wrote sweet romantic short stories regularly for national women’s magazines. I’ve published thirty-seven of these stories.

I love both secular and Christian fiction. I also love young adult fiction, and I hope to have my own young adult inspirational series someday!

If Two's Company...

They say that your testimony is never for yourself, but for someone else. In keeping with the validity of those words of wisdom, I’m going to share one of my literary testimonies with you.

When I began writing I embraced the view of ‘Art Imitating Life’. Not a bad vision to follow, wouldn’t you say? Well, my editor did not agree with my point of view as it pertained to the cast of characters I thought anyone could keep up with. Two seconds into the first round of developmental/content editing, two characters (I considered vital to the story), their supporting cast and 20,000 words were surgically removed from the story.

I say surgically removed because in my mind they were intricate to the story. They had become so necessary that it took some serious convincing to get me to agree that removing that literary tumor was the only way to save the life of my story.

If any of you have had surgery or have walked with one prior to, during and through the recovery process, you understand that each step is vital for a positive outcome. In my case, removal of what did not move the story along was the easy part. Following the procedure I was sent to ‘Dig Deeper’ rehab in order to strengthen what flesh had been left the bones of the now emaciated story.

In order to do that, I had to have the will to change. Change what? My mindset. As noble as that sounds, that couldn’t transpire until I first understand the benefits of the change. This happened through being able to apprehend and understand the types of characters that creat a story and their appropriat functions. For your conveniences a list of types of charcters and their functions are below.

Protagonist: The main character – one who is essential to the story

Antagonist: The one(s) who bring opposition to the protagonist

Supporting Character: A compliment to the major character – is useful in moving the story along

Minor Character: Plays a small role – Example: He is the private investigator who feeds info to the attorney who is a supporting character.*

*Rule of Thumb – don’t give him/her a name. Name insertion often leads the reader to want to know something about the character. Their information does not move the story along.

Understanding the roles of the character(s) is not enough. Having the right balance coupled with effective use of their roles is the winning combination to be applied. Once I understood this and the pitfalls of its absence, it became my job to rebuild the shell of what and who had been left, into a feasible story. That’sthe therapeutic role of rewriting.

Initially it was a challenge, but like all therapy, you have to work through the pain until the results of your commitment is seen by not only you, but by your editors and readers.

Too Much Drama

As a content editor one of my responsibilities is to determine when conflict crosses the line into unnecessary drama that dilutes the story.

Conflict is necessary in order to support the central theme of the story and to keep the reader engaged. However, authors can unknowingly cross into the danger zone, when drama becomes the constant that: 1) Does not move the story along; 2) Occurs with no feasible reason (just there for the ‘drama factor’; and 3) Occurs so often that if it is removed, there is no real story.

The fiction author’s job is to engage, inform and entertain their reader. Pacing is the key in order to maintain interest. Fleshing out the characters and the feasibility of the plot is equally important. In doing so you should be moved, at the least, to research the character’s: 1) Strength and weaknesses; 2) Temperament; 3) Habits (good and bad) and 4) Worldview.

Armed with this information you apply it to the central theme. Ask yourself how these characters effectively fit into that theme and how do you keep them true to who you have built them to be. Build on the conflict that comes with working through the plot in your mind, on paper and with others. In doing so it will give you a clear view of how to arrive at your destination.

Please note, you DO want to engage the reader with some drama, but not so much that it overshadows the intent of the story. Below are two examples of works with drama. You determine which is feasible.

Example: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Something from one or the others’ past comes to light. Couple separates. In the interim scenarios or someone or both strives to keep them apart. They overcome obstacles and learn from whatever it is the book was set up for them to achieve.

Example Two: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Something from their past comes to light. Couple separate. Everything under the sun from, high-speed car chases, fist fights, a carjacking, baby mama drama and two or three added lovers, make their way onto the pages. Add to that an ending that ties up no loose ends and/or makes any sense and you have the too much drama factor.

Now before you ask the question allow me to answer it. You can have a fair amount if not all of the elements above incorporated into your story and still make it a winner. It’s all in the presentation. Think through how this could possibly happen without using vague, non-supportive reasoning to justify the ending and leave the reader scratching their heads.

As a writer have you ever felt like the task of assembling a cast of characters is akin to hiring personnel to guard the President? Often that is what it can feel like if you don’t have a strategy to help you to perfect those memorable, yet fictitious beings.

Developing characters that readers will remember and talk about as if they were real, takes skill, a vivid imagination and WORK. One of the best ways to build your characters is getting to know them, and at times, become them. Get inside their heads and feel what they feel, see what they see, walk and talk like them. Sound crazy? To some it may be, but there is a line from Driving Ms. Daisy that stayed with me. The scene was that of Ms. Daisy making a statement of assumption to her driver Hoke. His simper yet profound response was, “How can you see what I see, lest you seeing through my eyes?”

How can you the writer be true to the reader lest you know who your characters are from the inside out and present them in a way no other author could?

Start with a character chart. You don’t have to marry the first draft, just sketch them out and then take a look at how you have or plan to use them to move the story along.

I once read that the characteristics of a character should be written in such a way that your reader will know who they are even if their name doesn’t appear in the scene. So how do you do that? Add those little idiosyncrasies that may not initially be picked up, but are key to who they are, what could possibly transpire if they show up or you tick them off. Equally as important to building the character is their profession, education, life experiences, family dynamics, personal fetishes and much more.

I will reiterate that building strong characters takes work, but it can also be fun. Bounce their personalities of a few friends or professionals who can help bring clarity to road blocks.

The End Result

Consumers have an expectation of a great return on their investment. Book buyers are no differenct. If a reader has invested finances and time to read your work, the least they are owed is a work that is stimulating, insightful and one that offers a feasible ending.

There are other elements of expectation, but today we will deal with that often debated subject of the ‘End Vision Strategy – The Feasible Ending’.

Please note that the ending of your story can make or break the story. If you have guided your reader through a course that is reasonably intriguing only to leave them mystified or disappointed at the end, you may have lost a potential fan. Not only that, but they may not recommend the read to others or (heaven forbid) they discourage others from reading your book.

The ending of your story mus be able to support the action, plot and storyline it was built upon. It must tie up all the loose ends and turn on the light over the expertly placed hints left in previous chapters. Above all, the strong ending must make sense and render an aura satisfaction to the reader for not only their financial and reading investment, but to a degree, for the characters you have created.

In order to achieve that goal, throughout the writing process, take the time to look at the synopsis you have written for your story. Now, look at what you have written and determine if you are headed in the right direction.

Haven’t written that synopsis or determined what the ending will be? STOP right where you are.

They synopsis is vital to what you are writing. It is your roadmap that clearly gives definition to the adage, ‘you can’t get to where you’re going if you can’t see your destination’. Your synopsis and storyline will help you to determine where you are, if you’re on the right track and if you working toward building that strong ending every reader deserves (where you’re going). If you haven't done so, NOW is the time to do so.

Please note that the strong ending does not necessarily mean that it is a HAPPY ending, but it must correlate with what you have built the story to be. In other words, it must deliver the goods.

I hope that you find this information helpful and that it will serve as an encouragement to you as you make your way toward writing that dynamic book the world is waiting for.

Is This Feasible?

How many times have you received promotions for upcoming books that immediately spark your interest? Within days, advertisements of the release land in your inbox, are discussed on popular writing groups and show up on major literary promotion sites. The buzz is all around and rather than wait, you preorder the book and eagerly await its arrival.

The blessed day arrives and without reserve you tear open the cardboard wrapping separating you from that coveted read. Its cover is appealing. You fondle it as if it were a Braille primer. It looks good, it feels good and you carry it to your favorite reading spot. Curled in the reading position your family already knows that acceptable interruption must be in the category of someone having lost a limb or the house being on fire.

Marathon reading has now begun – or has it?

Several chapters in, you’re scratching your head. What? How could that happen? No, that’s not realistic given the timeline, profession. What is the name of this book?

You press on, hoping that it will all make sense in the end and that this read will not become an exercise in futility. But, it is. It is simply because the great idea the story was predicated on and promoted as, never happened. It didn’t due to lack of:

*End result vision

*Character development

*Too much drama

*Too many walk on characters taking up story development space

*Absence of appropriate research

The list of story-maiming possibilities can go on, but for the sake of space we will not go into overkill.

As writers it is our responsibility to give the reader a positive return on their investment. That starts with an end result strategy. What that means is that you see the end the work towards bringing the story to an end that can reasonably support the vision.

Its purpose is to combine with the youth of the West Seattle community to inspire a love for the written word through storytelling and visuals arts from a variety of ethnicities. Karol Brown is the unforgettable Aunt Harriet Tubman. From the moment she walks onto the stage Karol is the elderly Aunt Harriet Tubman to everyone in the room. The audience laughs, cries and sings with Aunt Harriet as they visit with her in the parlor of the convalescent home she founded in Auburn, New York where she lived until she died on March 10, 1913 at age 92.

Isn't She Precious

Congratulations to Mo'Nique for winning the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Mary Jones in the movie Precious.

Ask anyone their feelings regarding the movie Precious and you will definitely get an ear full.

Precious was a movie, in my opinion, that needed to be told – from both sides.

Was it a hard movie to watch? For me, yes! Was it one that focused on what society tends to personify when it comes to people of color? Yes! Did it have redeeming qualities? In my opinion -- YES!

Art often imitates life and life is not the fairy tale people choose to lose themselves in. I am thankful that Ms. Mo'Nique took on this role that needed to be told; that has given hope to those who had lost hope as the abuser and the abused.

Mary Jones was all too real. I grew up with Mary Jones. No, she wasn't my mother, but she was the mother of some close to me. What I observed in my childhood in terms of abuse to my childhood friends, is not what even adults should have witnessed. Yet, through it all, like Precious, they persevered through physical and mental abuse. They did because they made a decision not to become double victims.

The story, although portrayed by African American actors, is not solely our story. Abuse has cycles that is bilingual and is a world traveler. It knows no gender nor is it limited by socio-economic boundaries. Abuse is universal and until we acknowledge, expose and above all things, care enough to help, the cycle will continue and the Mary Joneses of the world will continue to be judge, jury and in some instances, executioners of those who are oh, so Precious.

Be Careful What You Ask For

DO YOU SEE WHAT THEY SEE?

Wedding preparations have been what most women literally dream of from childhood. The same holds true for Indigo Burns. Numbered among her many dreams has been to become a successful photographer – check; marry the man of her dreams – check; have her family restored – no check.

Dreams That Won't Let Go Devotion

Who doesn’t have dreams?

Martin Luther King Jr. is famous for his. In biblical times, Joseph’s nearly got him killed – at the hands of his brothers.

Dreams can haunt us or heal us. They can give us hope or leave us hopelessly frustrated.

Sometimes we feel stuck, as if the desires of our heart don’t matter, to God or anyone else. We feel invisible, as we watch those around us get blessed, while we seem to regress. Or maybe we feel inadequate, as if we’re not good enough or smart enough to be worthy of the dream we imagine.

If any of these scenarios sound like you, pause wherever you are right now and acknowledge what you’re feeling.

Then, make up your mind that your feelings will not control your future. Your feelings will not fuel your fate. Because if God gave you the desire, he did so for a reason. He planted a seed in your heart or in your spirit that He knows you can nurture into a full bloom.

In Genesis 37:20, we see Joseph’s jealous brothers serving as dream stealers. They throw him into a pit to be devoured by wild animals and believe they’ve snuffed the life out of his bigger-than-life vision.

In your reality, the dream stealer may simply be fear. But as 1 John 4:18 declares, where God dwells, so does love. His perfect love leaves no room for fear or for doubt.

You may have tried and failed; or maybe every time you start, you can’t move past “Go.” Along with fear, other obstacles seem to block your path.

Remind yourself today that an obstacle is little more than a test to strengthen your faith, your endurance and your assurance that the dream you’re destined to birth will be mighty, just as Martin’s was, and just as Joseph’s was.

Your dream may not involve plans to impact millions or thousands, but any soul you touch for Christ is worth that and more. Your dream may not even be ministry-related, but if you are one of God's children, any vision He gives you will be anointed with his purpose.

Your dream may be birthed from you, but if it’s God-ordained, it may not be about you. God is calling you to believe in your dreams, and give them life, so that you can bless others and serve as a light for Him.

Ask God to give you clarity and wisdom about how best to bring your dreams to life, and to give you the courage, the patience and the faith to trust that He will open doors and bless your efforts and your obedience in His own timing.

DELIVERANCE

Deliverance, from a biblical perspective represents a purging, if you will – a coming through/overcoming/winning the battle with the assistance of God. It is the fulfillment of the reason for Christ’s birth, life and death. Deliverance is freedom – in Christ.

Within the pages of SistahFaith, Poet Shelette Carlisle paints a clear visual of the aforementioned definition. ARE YOU KEEPING UP?

As authors, writing is our passion, it’s in our blood, drives us to remain awake at least one more moment in order to exhaust the flow of the present muse. Beyond the passion of writing, our desire (at least for most of us) is to get our books into the hands of as many readers as possible.

At the top of our strategy for sales is placement of our intellectual property upon the shelves of bookstores across the nation.

With the advent of the Internet and electronic reading devices opportunity for national and international exposure has increased. Yet, with the plethora of choices available, the standard question most will ask when it is known that you have published is – is your book in the bookstore?

Now granted, their penchant for online shopping may have kept them out of a brick and mortar store for the last four years; and if they purchase it will more than likely be online, but, they want to know if your book is on the shelf.

Why? Simple answer – because that’s the way it is in the mind of most readers. However, satisfying the expectation of that mindset is becoming increasingly challenging for American booksellers.

According to Publisher Weekly booksellers are facing increasing challenges in terms of access to books available for purchase. They are due to the minimizing and in some cases the elimination of ARC mailings and severe cuts in field reps available to call upon establishments that were once the bread and butter of the industry.

Times are constantly changing in the publishing industry and it is your responsibility to -- Keep Up!

Today, as you begin your strategy for publication, or consider revamping that current plan, I urge you to understand the pros and cons of getting your books into the hands of the reader. Keep up with the trends that apply to your profession and determine what works best for you. Do not forsake traditional means, but do employ the option of diversification and creativity in your quest to exposing readers to the work you have labored over.

Singing from the Heart

The lyrical title of Songs of Deliverance is one that invites readers to dance with characters and circumstances left to ponder at the close of its predecessor, Rhythms of Grace.

Getting beyond the surface requires unlocking (willingly and forcefully) doors that hold us hostage to our pasts. So it is with four friends who have returned to their beginnings.

The return to Testimony, Ohio cleverly weaves the richness of the past of a devalued people with the necessity of decision making for the future of Grace, Brian, Zeely and Ron. Through exposure of church and personal truths Author Griffith draws the reader into the stage she has skillfully set. Through the power of the written word, the story speaks to the harsh realities of choices as her characters must deal with – what is.

First Man: “Why are there no books on the shelves about us by us that are wholesome and deals with real life issues and has feasible answers?”

Second Man: Why haven’t you written one yet?

End Scene.

Enter Pastor, husband, father and now debut author, Bernard Boulton. The following narrative is for you, the reading audience. Those he has been ordained to reach out to through the ministry of the pen.

The season to dream had concluded. The season of action was at hand. Waking from what had been more than a dream, Bernard Boulton followed intuition and began to write. He wrote with the purpose of producing that which would encourage, empower and entertain. The end result of that effort was his debut novel Do You Wanna Be Made Whole?

One might ask, why this title?

In order to answer one would need to understand having a burden for others. In life we are given specific purposes. What we do with that entrusted gift, may not always be understood or appreciated by its intended recipient. What can be said in response is that to obey is better than sacrifice.

Through the fitting process that encompasses renewed faith these three will come to understand that “their future is greater than their past and that tomorrow has hope attached to. All that is required is that they stand up, repent and press on.”

It's A New Year

As I reflected on the holiday season I found myself viewing it through different eyes. No, I didn’t turn my back on Christmas, but I am blessed to have had the opportunity to share the true meaning of the celebration with friends and family.

Continuing on to Kwanzaa (for those who observe the celebration), focus is placed upon its seven principles:

Umoja (oo-MOH-jah): Unity / Success starts with Unity. Unity of family, community, nation and race.

Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-LEE-ah): Self-Determination / To be responsible for ourselves. To create your own destiny.

Ujima (oo-JEE-mah): Collective work and responsibility / To build and maintain your community together. To work together to help one another within your community.

Ujamaa (oo-jah-MAH): Collective economics / To build, maintain, and support our own stores, establishments, and businesses.

Nia (NEE-ah): Purpose / To restore African American people to their traditional greatness. To be responsible to Those Who Came Before (our ancestors) and to Those Who Will Follow (our descendants).

Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah): Creativity / Using creativity and imagination to make your communities better than what you inherited.

Imani (ee-MAH-nee): Faith / Believing in our people, our families, our educators, our leaders, and the righteousness of the African American struggle.

The principle of Faith – Imani is one that has held my attention for the last few days. As I reflected I thought it ironic that faith was the principle of reflection as we begin our new year. Faith is that thing, that belief, that fire that drives us to believe when all hopes seems gone, when others tell us we cannot make it, it compels and gives the strength to try one more time as you expect a positive result.

So I ask, as you go into this new season, what are you expecting? Do you have the faith to believe you can accomplish more as it pertains to your writing in particular and life in general? Do you have the faith to believe beyond boundaries and limitations set by others, or perhaps, you?

I encourage you to have faith that you will overcome obstacles that have been strongholds. Have faith that through hard work, patience and obedience that you will achieve all that has been ordained for you in this season.

As we head into this new year, my prayer for you is that your faith faileth not.

Peace In The Midst Of A Thousand Storms

Seems like I have had at least a thousand things to worry about over the last four or five years, yet my faith in God has managed to give me some peace in the midst of my challenges, enough peace to get me through.

I read the following passage by the French Jesuit, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, S.J. as part of my morning meditation most days, and it serves to calm me. I hope it does the same for you:

I hope that God will supply for everything and I feel a confidence in [Him] which keeps me above all troubles. So I remain clam and in peace in the midst of a thousand worries and complications in which I should have expected, naturally speaking, to be overwhelmed.

When I have done what I think before God I ought to do, the success of the enterprise will be what he chooses: I abandon that question entirely to him and with my whole heart, thanking him for everything in advance, desiring only in everything and everywhere his holy will, because I am convinced by faith and by many personal experiences that everything comes from God, and that he is powerful enough and a good enough Father to bring all issues to the best advantage of his dear children.

As we approach the last week before Christmas with all of the stress the holiday brings especially in this time of financial difficulty in our economy, as we remember and long for loved ones that have gone on, as we settle ourselves in to wait on the New Year ( who would have thought 2010 would come so quickly ) with hope and faith that "the same trouble don't last always" let us be mindful that there is indeed some peace in the storms of life, if we only believe and trust God.

I really like Christmas music. Don't get me wrong, the lights and aromas of the season are wonderful too but it's the music that puts me in the mood. And it seems there's nothing like hearing the strains of a familiar song, sang A Capella, floating like snow flakes on the night air.

As a kid, I wanted so much to go caroling. If anybody needed to hear the message that rough place could be made smooth it was my poverty-stricken Southern neighborhood, particularly at Christmas when you were lucky to get a charity gift box. Trouble was my family and neighbors thought that going door to door at night, singing Christmas songs was for white folks. So I kept my secret wish to myself.

While in college, I made a point of finding a caroling group each Christmas. Yes, the group was usually made up mostly of white

students. Did it really matter? We were spreading the Good News

to other students, some of them from lands afar. What better gift could we give the world?

So, these days when carols come to mind, I sing them out loud—night or day. Gloria in excelsis deo, Glory to God in the Highest, to you and yours this blessed season.

A divine revelation or prophetic word is not necessary to know that stress and worry is plaguing households across the country. Christian homes included. Record unemployment and foreclosures along with decreasing salaries have stirred even the “seasoned” saints. The faces of my prayer partners and spiritual advisors are now etched with anxiety instead of joy. I am not exempt. 2009 was a very trying time for me, but I have learned like the Apostle Paul to be content in whatever state I am in. Simply put, I have learned to rest.

My favorite definition of rest is: freedom from mental or emotional anxiety. Freedom is release from captivity or slavery. During the past twelve months I had mental notions of trusting in God’s provisions for my life, but simultaneously outwardly fretting. Through much trial and error, I learned that rest is a choice. Once that choice is made, peace follows.

In 2010, I urge everyone to do as I have: Remove Emotional Stress Tendencies. REST. Learn to trust in the Creator and be not swayed by news reports and bleak economic forecasts. The God who created heaven and earth has promised to supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory. God doesn’t lie; therefore, if He said it, we can REST. Christmas for me is the best holiday of the year! It is more than a holiday, it is actually a time set aside for me to reflect, remember, and recall the birth of Jesus Christ. DO YOU HAVE A WRITER'S PLAN?

Over the last few months there has been a noticeable increase in online and magazine advertising regarding self-publishing services. This blitz has increased the curiosity of authors considering their options for publication. The increased interest in the possibility has significantly risen since Thomas Nelson and now Harlequin, have thrown their hats into the self-publishing arena.

Since these services have been more aggressively promoted, of late, more than what I would consider the average amount of inquiries have landed in my inbox. Most were questions pertaining to self-publishing in general. In particular, queries were regarding which self-publishing company I would recommend.

Because I do not want this site to become a place for endorsement (in this realm) I will continue to refrain from doing so. But, I would have been remiss if I had not taken the time to update my information. To that end I have interviewed a few of the new companies and re-interviewed some of the established ones as well. In doing so I am confident in reinforcing what has consistently been suggested on this site – know your business.

How does one come to that point? By having a WRITER’S PLAN!

I cannot stress strongly enough that writing is a business. Once you place the last punctuation on the page you must don your business hat. It is your business to understand as much as possible about the options of publication and the rules under which they operate.

Self-publishing,* rather, assisted self-publishing** can be a viable option. It can be viable if you know the pertinent questions to ask when interviewing*** perspective publishing assistants and if their practices align with your plan and budget. However, you will not know what is viable if you do not become knowledgeable by studying the industry.

Armed with industry knowledge you will be equipped to lay the foundation for your WRITER’S PLAN. That plan should include, but is not limited to the questions listed below to be asked of these companies and of yourself.

*Are they a publisher, printer or POD entity?
*Are they willing to take the time to go over each item in their offered package?
*Can they adequately break down their editing process?
*Do you know the level of editing necessary for your project?
*Is tiered editing included or offered at ala carte prices?
*If editing is additional, will they give you a precise breakdown of the charges?
*Do they charge by the word or by the page? (This is a big ticket item)
*Do they consistently suggest higher packages in order to give you what THEY feel you need?
*Do they suggest the lower priced package because you may not be that concerned about a few typos or grammatical errors?
*Do YOU know if fees charged are reasonable?
*Do YOU know what is considered unreasonable fees?
*Are your books returnable by bookstores?
*What is your right to take you book and walk if you are not satisfied with their services?
THE MASTER QUESTION: How much will it cost you to purchase inventory?

This list could go on and on, but I believe there is enough presented here to get you started.

What I cannot stress enough is not to allow the impatience of wanting to see your name in print override common sense. What you put out has your name on it. People will forgive a publisher but they will remember YOUR name on what they consider a substandard product. It is up to you to decide what YOUR name will stand for. That all begins with THE WRITER’S PLAN.

I close with reminding you that the words buyer beware are those that should be heeded. You will not get everything we want out of every business transaction. However, you can minimize problems when you take the time to investigate all vendors considered for any aspect of your business. What will be your most valuable tool will be THE WRITER'S PLAN that you enlist to help bring your goal of publishing in the spirit of excellence to an expected end.

Standing In The Midst of the Storm

Have you ever felt like your worth is less than that of others because you don’t make six figures or have all the tangibles that society deems necessary in order for you to be certified as successful?

Do you rent rather than own?

Did you lose that contract you worked so hard to land? Has the door of opportunity suddenly closed in your face?

Have you lost your drive because you’re not at the level that others in your profession or ministry have already reached?

Have you lost possessions or jobs that society said you had to have in order to be considered successful?

Do you feel like a failure?

You do? Why? – Haven’t you been speaking life into your circumstances and over your family? If you haven’t you should because these words have already been spoken over you: “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Look at the mountains in your life, in your business plan and maybe even in your faith. By faith you can speak to that mountain. It can be removed. You just have to apply faith to works and listen to that still quiet voice for instructions.

My final questions to you today is this - Do you have the courage to stand in the midst of your storm? Will you speak to the mountains in your life?

THE BOTTOM LINE OF BUSINESS

This past week has been very interesting in terms of Thomas Nelson’s ‘self-publishing announcement. I have heard responses that ran the gamut from this being as great as hot dogs, apple pie and baseball to – what?

In my time in this industry, the very real mindset that is continually bantered about has been that of self-publishing being the literary pariah that would keep every author's name attached to it, in the ranks of sub-standard.

I understood the mindset given the quality of what was and continues to be ‘published’ utilizing the services of a majority of ‘self-publishing companies, PODs and Vanity Presses'. I also understood why it became the norm rather than the exception – because those contracting with these companies have no idea what the business of writing is.

Returning to the topic of this blog – the bottom line of business practices that I would like to impress upon you in our short time together is one that every person in business should be aware of -- beware of doors that had previously been locked with no less than industry angels and flaming swords preventing entry suddenly opening. When those doors swing open with a sudden interest in your services or product it is most often predicated upon a need for financial gain from YOUR hard work.

The outcry over what some have viewed as a less than budget or client friendly option, to Thomas Nelson and others jumping on the bandwagon is just plain business; a way to shore up the bottom line.

Thomas Nelson and other Houses feeling the economic pinch understand the necessity to have mechanisms in place to offset lost revenue. Businesses survive on the bottom line. Currently the instrument used to shore up the money holes seeping through the levees of some publishing houses has been the extension of self-publishing services. It may be viewed as hypocrital and even greedy by some, but remaining solvent is their business, their job so to speak.

Your job as a potential self-published author is to educate yourself regarding the business side of the industry. Let me reiterate, in order to keep your levee from hemorrhaging money you can ill-afford to lose, know YOUR business.

Knowing your business requires YOU not lose focus of YOUR goal by getting caught in the hype of media spin and others who stand to gain from your desire to get your words in print. It is YOUR business to take responsibility to:

*Not be intimidated by or willingly signing on for something you do not understand

*Examine thoroughly and question everything offered in the self-publishing package in order to clearly understand YOUR financial responsibility

*Question costly ala carte services required in order to be considered for ‘broader’ industry exposure, etc. – especially if at their discretion there is no guarantee of the broader exposure

*Know exactly who you are doing business with, i.e., are you being farmed out to a POD/Vanity press with the contractual obligation to operate under their guidelines?

*Will the imprint be that of the Name house or the subsidiary you may be diverted to?

*Know who owns the rights to your book and for how long

*Who determines when the book is ready for print?

*What is your right in terms of reprinting of a deficient product?

*What is the termination parameters should you chose to sever ties with company?

*Do have the right to take your book with you?

*Will you have to pay to take that book with you?

*What is your right in terms of other forms of publication of your book?

*Is your book returnable?

*THE BIGGY – How much will it cost you to purchase YOUR books for inventory?

This list could go on and on, but that is not the goal of this post. The goal is for you to understand that writing is a business and that when you leave to others, often times your goal becomes their bottom line.

One area I have yet to hear debated is why Thomas Nelson and others with similar industry reputations, would risk their names with such a risky move? My theory is that they will do so relying upon the art of disassociation as their insulation from too much public backlash from customers.

Beyond the large amounts of money they stand to gain, studies have shown that readers more often than not compartmentalize what is in their hand. They will take another chance or two or three on a publisher who produces a substandard product. They tend to be less forgiving of the author whose name appears on the book. It is a winning situation for most publishers as the line of hopefuls looking to be ‘picked up’ by their company seems to have no end in sight.

These words are not to discourage. These words are meant to plant seeds that prayerfully will bear foundational fruit that will support and protect the bottom line of your business – the writing business entrusted to you.

This Has Been A True Blessing

This entire week has truly been a blessing. The opportunity to launch this new site with old and new friends and celebrate my birthday was so much fun. Most of all, the opportunity to raise money for Breast Cancer research was the best gift I could have ever received. Thank you all so much for lending a hand to make this the best year yet. Plans are already underway for next year’s event so do stay tuned for information.

With this being our last night I thought I’d pull out all the stops and throw down with a down-home, lip smakin’, finger lickin’, grease all over your face meal. But remember, just because we’re rolling up our sleeves doesn’t mean you can come raggedy. LOL

This is a black and white affair with a splash of purple. So throw on your favorite black jeans, dress it up the way only you can and come on out to help me take this party out with a memory that will last until next year.

It has been unseasonably warm so we’re eating under the stars tonight. Discussions with peers often lead to the topic of, “I had this great idea, but didn’t have anything to write it down on.”

Been there, done that.

One of the best presents I received from my husband was a hand-held micro recorder. It solved my problem of needing to pull to the side of the road to find paper in my purse to write something down, or trying to remember what came to me the night before. What is so great about them is that they come with a choice of options to fit your particular need. The one I have can be plugged into my computer’s USB port for transcription.

If you’re on a budget and have a high-tech cell phone, you can use the voice notes option to record your thoughts. Another thing you can do is leave yourself a voice message on your home phone.

I’m sure that you all have tidbits of information on how you capture your muse for later transcription. We’d love to hear them.

Jacquelin Thomas has definitely written a work that will give most a moment of pause. Her subject matter is a sensitive subject and one that will elicit varied responses. It will elicit a variety of responses because of the mixed definitions of values being embraced and the emergence of the Liberated Christian.

She will be the first to tell you that she is not the expert and that her intent with this work is not to tell you what you should and should not do within the confines of your bedroom. What she does say is that – “It comes down to you, your spouse and your conscience.

Throughout the pages of The Ideal Wife Author Thomas presents a theme that most overlook in their walk and is not often taught from the pulpit. That central theme focuses upon having a personal relationship with God and studying His Word for clarity.

She is a firm believer in the church being a safe haven where couples can talk openly about their concerns about sexuality as it pertains to the marriage covenant. It should also be a place where people can come to discuss concerns about past practices and mindsets that could destroy the sanctity of that covenant.

After reading The Ideal Wife some may be challenged by what comes across the pulpit, from friends and what they read in magazines. Take comfort in the fact that there is always a very real source for the truth to our questions. In our seeking we must be mindful as to where we search. James 1:5 clearly states: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

This is the second day of our week-long celebration and I know you’re all ready to let your hair down, sample the wonderful meal we have for you and relax. We will definitely do that, but before we do I’d like to share a bit of fruit with you.

What Do Readers Want?

This is a question that has been debated on many fronts. The responses are varied and are most definitely rooted in a deep belief that ‘my’ answer is the ‘right’ answer.

To be perfectly honest I have to agree that each answer is right – for that individual.

What is considered a marketable story varies from publisher to publisher and from writer to writer. Columns are dedicated to telling us what we want. As authors we study the market trends, listen to our publisher, agent and editor to determine if we’re on the right track. There is wisdom in doing so, but my question to you today is, who asks the readers what they would like to read? More importantly, who listens when the readers express a desire for something that steps away from what is considered the norm?

I encourage you to take the time to poll your readers to find out what it is they are seeking in a book, then consider if this what you would like to write. If so, why haven’t you written it? What is holding you back? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
